Our passion for golf simulators stated in the mid 1990s when we would spend hours playing commercial golf simulators in the cold ohio winters. Limited computer technology made golf simulators very expensive and not very accurate. Back then, a commercial golf simulator still cost 40k+. The older commercial golf simulators tracked only the ball and no matter how you hit it, it always seemed to go straight! These indoor golf simulators could not track the club or ball spin, so the accuracy was not very good .
Today, indoor golf simulator technology has come a long way, Now we can track not only the ball, but the club as well. BALL DATA vs CLUB HEAD DATA. Entry level golf simulators like optishot and p3proswing measure the club head only. Most golfers know what the ball is going to do by looking at face angle and swing path. This is the simplest swing data to interpret. Golf launch monitors like Skytrak measure only ball data. By looking at ball spin rate and launch angle, the golfer will need to interpret what his ball is doing in relationship to what the club is doing. With the Skytak launch monitor, its a little more complicated to interpret your swing

A Virtual Home Golf Simulator is a computerized tracking unit that allows one to play golf on a graphically or photographically simulated indoor driving range or virtual golf course indoors. Golf Simulator Mats
All of our golf simulator systems use a sensor mat, which is essentially a rectangular mat containing 16-101 infrared sensors and microchips that can monitor the speed of the club as it passes the back sensor, the angle of the club and club speed as the ball and club pass the second sensor following impact and the direction of the ball as the club passes the third sensor. Such systems are used by Optishot, Protee, P3proswing and Trugolf
Audio systems on golf simulators
Trugolf uses a sonic system with strategically placed microphones around the impact screen. Behind the impact screen is a baffler to enhance the sound of the ball. The system measures and compares the intensity of sound that is produced by the ball hitting the screen. Using 3 or more directional microphones and an interface that can measure the sound amplitude of the impact from each microphone, an XY impact position can be determined.
Camera Systems on indoor golf simulators
Cameras are becoming the norm in golf simulation. ProTee United uses up to 2 high speed cameras to pick up ball flight information. These cameras are over the ball and floor level right of the golfer. They pick up ball spin rate and launch angle. Using the cameras is optional on the protee golf simulators.

The typical dimensions of a golf simulator are approximately 10-15 ft wide × 10 ft in length and 10 ft in height.. 10 ft wide is minimum for a full golf simulator, 12 ft is ideal since it allow you to center the ball more and 15 ft is for RH/LH golf simulator setup

Accuracy of a golf simulator
A key factor attribute of any indoor simulator is accuracy. Obviously the protee’s 101 sensor mat is going to be more accurate than optishot’s 16 sensor mat. But both golf sensors are going to show you what your swing is doing. The optishot might be slightly less accurate, but is your coming outside in and leave the face open, optishot is going to show a fade or slice. The key with any golf simulator is know what the ball is doing.
